In decade 1986-1995 the dipterological research was significantly stimulated by the first three Dipterological Congresses (1986 Budapest, 1990 Bratislava, 1994 Guelph) and by publishing the essential part of the Catalogue of Palaearctic Diptera (13 volumes from 1984 to 1993). Czech and Slovak dipterists took on the organisation of the 2nd International Congress of Dipterology held in Bratislava and participated extensively on the catalogue. They presented 15 oral and 26 poster communications on the 2nd congress and prepared Palaearctic catalogues of 22 families as authors or co-authors. In addition to, the tradition of home dipterological workshops was continued and the 9th to 12th Workshops of Czech and Slovak Dipterist were performed in the evaluated period and the proceedings from workshops were published as Dipterologica bohemoslovaca, volumes 4 to 7. From a large array of further activities, especially the international Conference on Medical and Veterinary Dipterology held in Eeské Budijovice (1987) is worth mentioning.
As an evidence of the productive co-operation of home dipterist the first modern check list of native Diptera (1987) and the 2nd and 3rd part of the prodrome of Slovakian Diptera (1986, 1989) may serve. Moreover, the different specialisation of Czech and Slovak dipterist enables the complex taxocoenotic investigations of some valuable ecosystems based on quite reliable and modern identification. In a consequence, intensive ecological and faunistic research resulted in new taxonomic and faunistic records. A recently published extensive list of Diptera of the Bukovské vrchy Mts. is a good example of such a long-term collective effort. Comprehensive studies based chiefly on the ecological and faunistic evaluation of Brachycera have been devoted, e.g., to the Osecká dump near Duchcov, Metuje river valley, peat bogs of northern Moravia, floodplain forest area, agricultural landscape in southern Moravia, Hády Hills near Brno and to a remarkable set of protected landscape areas and valuable collecting sites in Slovakia.
Political changes in central and eastern Europe to the end of the 80th caused re-instalation of the democratic system in the former Czechoslovakia as well. In this way possibilities for participation on conferences, collecting trips to foreign countries, study of historical and type material in museums and fruitful contacts with specialists abroad have become much more extensive. Such conditions have been reflected in the increasing number of articles devoted to exotic groups of Diptera and taxonomic studies embracing large zoogeographical regions or all the world.
In the framework of general dipterology the control of fly reproduction was extensively studied and the mycetome and the reproductive system of tsetse flies were described in detail. Some genetics method of blood-succing flies control were examined and tests of genotoxicity on Drosophila were verified. Ethological studies were focused on mating swarms and epigamic behaviour in Empididae, hilltopping aggregations of Sarcophagidae and metamorphosis behaviour of some model species. Very diverse ecological aspects included studies on Diptera of communal refuse depositions, effects of climatic factors on different taxocoenoses of Diptera, influnce of water management in floodplain forests, etc. Seasonal and daily dynamics was investagated chiefly in haematophagous species but also in Chironomidae, Sciomyzidae and Sarcophagidae. A special attention was paid to some groups of soil larvae (Chironomidae) and assemblages of aquatic larvae in different types of running waters in particular. Bioindicative properties of some model groups were used for evaluation of water pollution and to estimate the environment deteriorisation.
Problematics of ecomic dipterology is mainly represented by papers delaing with pest of cereals, vegetable, pulses and cherries. More than 20 papers is devoted to Cecidomyiidae injouring deciduous trees. In the field of medical and veterinary dipterology, traditional attention has been paid to the occurrence and health importance of blood-succing Diptera that have been studied as significant vectors of viruses and other disease originators. New methods of biological control particularly of diseases carriers have been tested and introduced. Several authors studied effects of different strains of Bacillus thuringiensis and B. sphaericus, insecticidal properties of metabolites of Tolypocladium fungi and biological interactions between cyanobacteria and mosquito larvae. Several cases of myiasis in man were described and hypodermosis has been permanetly monitored in both our states and in some further states of Europe as well. Synanthropy was investigated as a theoretical problem of evolutionary strategy and a hygienic problem of the transmission of pathogens under different conditions. Last but not least, biological control has been largely applicated in a form of aphidophagous predators, several parasitoids and some groups of tephritids used agains different weeds in addition to some biological agents controlling haematophages and their larvae mentioned above.
The bibliography would never have been compiled without a promotion provided by all our dipterists who kindly checked lists of their papers. The manuscript was prepared with a support of the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic (Grant No. 96/206/0997) and the Ministry of Education of the Czech Republic (Project No. PG 97126). The electronic version of the bibliography was supported by The Masaryk University (Grant MSM 143100010).
