I really appreciate that the teachers are real “brainboxes” in their fields

David Zimčík comes from Uherské Hradiště. After graduating from the local grammar school, his steps were directed to our faculty, and specifically to the field of Biochemistry. He is currently studying a follow-up Master's degree with a specialisation in Genomics and Proteomics. In addition, he is a member of the Generation Mendel student association.

Rewriting seaweed DNA to eat plastics

Beaches covered with tons of PET bottles, seabirds with stomachs full of plastic, fish suffocating in a free-floating plastic bag. Human waste decimates not only nature but also its originators. Paradoxically, the smallest seaweed may contribute to solving this gigantic problem. Kristýna Jankůjová, from the CEITEC research centre in Brno, is currently addressing the question of how to “reprogram” seaweed to decompose plastics.

Conversations about the universe - part 3

In the third edition of ‘Conversations about the universe’, astrophysicist Norbert Werner and theoretical physicist Samuel Kováčik chose supermassive and microscopic black holes as their main theme. They will also discuss the presence of water on the illuminated part of the Moon and Norbert’s experiences while making observations in the SOFIA flying observatory.

Bára Hrnčířová graduated from the Matyáš Lerch Grammar School in Brno and is now studying Molecular Biology and Genetics at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University. She successfully completed her Bachelor’s degree last year and is now studying for her Master's degree. She is a founding member and President of the Generation Mendel Student Association.

Jana Klánová graduated from the Masaryk University’s Faculty of Science with a degree in Mathematics and Chemistry, and received her Doctorate in Environmental Chemistry. She has undertaken research in the fields of materials, molecular biology and environmental sciences in both the public and private sectors. Jana has been working at the RECETOX centre Since 2001, and has run the centre since 2013.

Laboratories are receiving up to six times more people interested in testing for Covid antibodies

There has been a significant increase in interest regarding antibody tests for covid-19 in the Czech Republic. This was confirmed by three separate laboratories addressed by Czech Television. People can now find out whether they have asymptomatic coronavirus or if they are carrying sufficient antibodies after having the illness. Researchers at Masaryk University are also working on a study to find out how long such antibodies can protect people from becoming reinfected (in Czech only).
