Here, we propose a new 3-year research project to investigate several critical aspects of the pathogenesis of alimentary TBE. The cellular and molecular factors underlying TBEV intestinal infection, pathology, inflammatory changes, and factors involved in the TBEV infection via the digestive tract are currently poorly understood. It is critical to understand the mechanisms involved in the development and physiopathology of this largely neglected TBEV mode of infection. We will use an innovative combination of the most advanced experimental approaches and state-of-the-art in vitro and in vivo models to investigate this important, but poorly understood aspect of TBE.
