Metallophosphates and -phosphonates attracted considerable interest in the area of catalysis, sorption, ion exchange, sensors, proton conductivity, intercalation chemistry, photochemistry, and materials chemistry. Most of the metal phosphonates possess two- or three- dimensional structures but molecular metallophosphonates are usually cage compounds. We will concentrate on titanium phosphates and phosphonates with molecular cluster units that could serve as precursors for the fabrication of porous materials, thin films, or ion conductors. We will explore the preparation of molecular titanophosphates and titanophosphonates by the solution reactions of organotitanium trifluorides and titanium alkoxides with trimethylsilyl esters of phosphoric or phosphonic acids. Reaction products will be characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, 1H, 19F and 31P NMR, mass spectra and X–ray diffraction analysis. This study should yield new structural types of the cage compounds.
