Abstract

The Upper Triassic red clays of the Chelsty deposit are mainly illitic in character with some admixture of smectite and mixed layered illite/smectite. They represent non- or low-calcerous variety. These features and suitable technological parameters (absorbability, shrinkage, bending strength after drying, make-up water, grain-size distribution) make these clays a valuable material for the production of ceramic wall and floor tiles, also roofing tiles and stonewares.
