We are approaching the end of the calendar year, which, on the one hand, brings the magical season of Christmas, but on the other hand, is also a time to look back. I, too, reflect on what the past year has brought, and I am very grateful. I feel especially thankful for you, my colleagues, who, through your daily activities, contribute to the growth of our faculty. It does not matter whether you are directly engaged in teaching activities, work in research, or indirectly provide administrative support to these activities. It is only thanks to you and your efforts that the faculty functions well, and for that, I thank you very much.
The Academic Senate of the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University (MU) re-elected Tomáš Kašparovský as the Dean of the Faculty of Science MU on October 18, 2021. In his second term of office, Tomáš Kašparovský will lead the faculty for the next four years, starting from February 2022. The rector of MU, Martin Bareš, appointed Kašparovský as the Dean on November 30.
During the recent Business Research Forum, Masaryk University (MU) presented its new MUNI Innovation Award for innovative achievement for the first time. Several experts from the Faculty of Science MU received the award for projects completed over the past six years. Congratulations!
From February 2022, the faculty management will consist of two female and five male Vice-Deans who, according to the Statute of the MU Faculty of Science, will represent the Dean in specific areas. On December 15, 2021, President Miloš Zeman appointed 80 new university professors on the basis of proposals from the scientific and artistic boards of universities. Tomáš Kašparovský, Petr Kubíček and Štěpánka Vaňáčová from our Faculty of Science are among the newly appointed professors. Congratulations!
The Dean of the Faculty of Science, Tomáš Kašparovský, honoured 36 personalities who had made a significant contribution to the development of the Faculty, and its departments and institutes, over the last few decades. The ceremony took place on November 19, 2021, in the refectory of the Mendel Museum, in the spirit of the anniversary of the Day of the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy and the International Student Day. The ceremony was initially planned to mark the 100th anniversary of teaching at the Faculty (October 19, 1920), but it had to be unfortunately postponed due to pandemic measures.
Scientists travel to Antarctica to study climate and stress
The J. G. Mendel Antarctic Station, built by the Masaryk University on James Ross Island, will become busy again. A 16-member expedition of scientists set off from Brno on December 16, 2021 for another expedition there under strict anti-epidemic measures.
Forty graduates of doctoral programmes and their lecturers have recently accepted from Vice-rector for research and doctoral studies Šárka Popíšilová an award for excellent achievements in their doctoral studies at Masaryk University.
In the past year 2021, which was affected by the pandemic also from the perspective of the HR Award project, especially in personal meeting opportunities, we continued to successfully implement the new HR strategy of the Faculty of Science MU. We were pleased that we got to the stage where we could share our experience with the public through the article The principles of the HR Award raised the level of job applicants at the MU Faculty of Science. We are proud that the Rector’s Award for outstanding teachers in the natural sciences was presented to Petr Liška of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, while the Rector’s Award for outstanding teachers in economics and informatics went to Jan Böhm, who works at our RECETOX centre. Congratulations!
Tomáš Tyc, a holder of the 2020 Masaryk University Rector’s Award for outstanding teachers, winner of the 2019 MUNI Science Slam, co-author of educational series for Czech Television and Czech Radio, an avid popularizer of physics plus a successful researcher. Physics captivated him as early as at primary school and he still enjoys finding ways to show its charm to students and broader public.
Vladimír Šindelář studied at the University of Chemical Technology in Prague, where he obtained his PhD at the Departmentof Polymers. He completed postdoctoral internships at Heriot-Watt University, Great Britain, and the University of Miami, USA. Since 2005 he has been working at our faculty, where he is engaged in the preparation of cyclic and non-cyclic compounds that serve as hosts in supramolecular chemistry and the description of host-guestinteractions using advanced analytical and physical methods.
Milan Číž graduated in General Biology at the Faculty of Science of MU. During and after his PhD studies he worked at the Institute of Biophysics of the CAS, where he was engaged in research on non-specific immunity. At the same time, he was working at the faculty, where he taught. Currently, he is mainly involved in being a guarantor of a study programme in English in Molecular and Cell Biology.
Masaryk University at the moment organizes vaccinations and revaccinations to COVID-19 for employees and students directly in its campuses. It is not necessary to register or reserve time.
